I seek to engage my viewers in a dialogue of colour, question and movement. My art work is a process of curiosity and expression. Shapes emerge and colours mingle as the paint dances across the canvas, my visceral reaction to music. From delicate washes to luscious layers, the microclimates of exploration and intuition generate new discoveries.
I dialogue with my paintings en français, the language of my childhood. My main influences are Matisse, Basquiat, Joan Mitchell and De Kooning.
Born in London, England, I grew up in Geneva, Switzerland and live in North Vancouver, BC Canada where I studied art at Emily Carr University of Fine Arts. I'm an art exhibition junkie so my travel gravitates to exhibitions in New York and Europe. Seeing my man Basquiat at the Bilbao Guggenheim was a highlight!
I document street art on my travels. See Street Art tab.
Art Community Involvement
I am honoured to serve as Assistant Art Curator at the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation in a volunteer capacity. The aim of the large and gorgeous collection of paintings, donated by generous local artists, is to "humanize every wall of the Hospital and use the healing power of art to create a calming, therapeutic environment." The collection is now approaching a value of $1 million.
I also love volunteering at the North Vancouver Community Arts Council exhibition openings at CityScape Community Art Space, North Vancouver.

"I am contacting you on behalf of the Saatchi Gallery here in London. Whilst searching the web I came upon your web site and was impressed by the high standard of work." Rachel Miles, Saatchi Gallery, London, England.
"Lucy’s paintings resonate with energy and immediacy. The “Immortals” series and “Blood Brothers" with encryptions and symbols reach deep into an ancient part of our human psych. Lucy has achieved the rich depth of emotions on her canvasses through combining her artistic vision, her mastery of the techniques needed to bring about the painting and her integrity by working from the very core of her creative process. Evident in her paintings is a wild and wise child. Dancing between the chaos and joy of life, Lucy Godwin’s art works embrace individual passionate moments and this can only be achieved by one who has full confidence in her creative process and the skill to carry it out." Laara WilliamSen, curator of 96 art exhibitions, Art Critic, Author of Art reVIEWS, June 24, 2010.
"Lucy, you have an exciting, energetic raw and edgy feel to your work that I see fitting in here in New York."
Renée Phillips, Editor-in-Chief, Manhattan Art International magazine 1983-2000; Member, International Association of Art Critics and curator of over 50 exhibitions in New York.
